The kindergarten partnership between Pfedelbach-Heuberg and Okombahe continues to grow.
Pfedelbach/Okombahe. For seven years, the Pfedelbach-Heuberg kindergarten has maintained a low-threshold partnership with the two kindergartens "Learn in Peace" and "Community Kindergarten Okombahe" in Namibia. The focus is not on a large program, but on a lively exchange on a small scale: songs, picture stories, craft ideas, materials, and personal encounters open children on both sides to a different world.
Encounters across continents
Twice a year, Joachim and Margret Knoche visit the kindergartens in Namibia and Pfedelbach. They share pictures and videos of the children's daily lives, bring small gifts, and pass on projects created on the other side. This makes the partnership tangible and personal for the children.
The exchange is deliberately kept low-threshold. Shared songs, picture stories about the sun and the cycle of the year, dried leaves and fruits, craft materials, and exercises with origami techniques demonstrate that even simple things can build bridges. Small suggestions lead to shared experiences that spark children's curiosity and encourage them to ask questions.
A morning song travels to Namibia
A special example of this connection is a morning song from Pfedelbach, in which each child is greeted individually. Now, children in Namibia also enjoy singing this song. What is a matter of course in the daily kindergarten routine in Pfedelbach has thus become a shared ritual across national borders.
During their most recent visit, Joachim and Margret Knoche brought four hand-decorated picture frames from Okombahe. These contained pictures taken by the Namibian children. The children in Pfedelbach watched the photos and videos from Namibia with great interest and attention. The impressions made it clear how different the living and learning conditions are in the kindergartens.
Thinking outside the box
The stark contrast between a well-equipped kindergarten in Pfedelbach and the rudimentary conditions in Okombahe became particularly evident. This very contrast is part of the learning process. The partnership helps to broaden perspectives, recognize differences, and avoid prematurely judging what is unfamiliar, instead fostering a deeper understanding.
This provides children with age-appropriate access to topics such as diversity, solidarity, and mutual respect. They experience that children elsewhere live, play, and learn differently – and yet they have much in common: a joy in singing, pictures, crafts, and being together.
Small gestures with a big impact
The partnership between Pfedelbach-Heuberg and Okombahe demonstrates that international exchange doesn't have to be complicated. It thrives on people who regularly share information, exchange materials, and cultivate personal connections. Songs, pictures, and crafts create an exchange that enriches children in both countries.
For seven years now, a connection has been growing that deliberately remains simple and is effective precisely because of this. It encourages people to approach others openly, to accept differences, and to discover common ground.
